John joined the IJS Board in 2019. A Life-long resident of Ipswich, John grew up boating and sailing in the North Shore area and spent many summers racing Flying Terns, Rhodes 19s, 210s and other one design boats in the Manchester and Marblehead area. His offshore racing experience includes the Halifax Race, the Bermuda Race and the Southern Ocean Racing Circuit.
From 1972 to 1997, John pursued a career as mate or master of traditional sailing vessels engaged in the Sailing School Vessel Industry; the mission of which was to teach students about the oceans through the experience of living and working at sea. John has logged many offshore miles in most of the major ocean basins of the world and holds a USCG 1600-ton Ocean Masters License. John is currently a math and science teacher at the Waring School, Beverly, MA. He is chair of the science department and applies his sea-going background to his class on Oceans and Climate. In the summer, he sails as one of the captains for the Schooner Fame of Salem.
